Plant Care Guide

Congratulations on your new kokedama! These living sculptures are designed to grow with you — and with a little intention and consistency, they'll thrive beautifully in your space. Here's everything you need to know to care for your piece.

Watering Your Kokedama

Kokedama are watered differently than traditional potted plants — and once you get the hang of it, it becomes a mindful little ritual.

Fill a bowl or sink with room-temperature water

Submerge the moss ball fully for 10–15 minutes until it feels heavy and saturated

Gently squeeze out excess water and allow it to drip dry before returning it to its spot

Water again when the moss feels light and dry to the touch — typically every 1–2 weeks depending on your home’s humidity and light levels

If the moss feels light when you pick it up, it’s time to water. If it still feels heavy, give it a few more days.

Light Requirements

Most of our kokedama thrive in bright, indirect light. Here’s a simple guide:

Ideal — Near a window with filtered light (sheer curtains work beautifully)

Avoid — Direct harsh sunlight, which can dry out the moss and scorch leaves

Avoid — Dark corners with little to no natural light

Rotate your kokedama every week or so to ensure even light exposure on all sides.

Temperature & Humidity

Kokedama love a stable, comfortable environment — just like us.

Keep them in spaces between 60–80°F

Avoid placing near air vents, heaters, or drafty windows which can dry them out quickly

If your home is dry, misting the moss lightly between waterings can help keep it happy

Fertilizing

During the growing season (spring and summer), you can give your kokedama a gentle boost:

Use a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength

Add it to your soaking water once a month

Skip fertilizing in fall and winter when the plant is resting

Signs to Watch For

Yellowing leaves — Could indicate overwatering or insufficient light

Drooping or wilting — Usually a sign it needs water; give it a thorough soak

Brown moss — Normal in dry environments; mist lightly and water consistently

Leggy growth — Your plant is reaching for more light; move it closer to a window

A Note from Neshia

Caring for your kokedama is an act of intention. Just like personal growth, it doesn’t happen overnight — it happens through small, consistent moments of attention and love. Be patient with your plant, and it will reward you with beauty and life.
